Making Your Bedroom More than Just a Place to Sleep

For many people the bedroom has become more than a place to sleep.  It has become a private retreat to unwind, get away from it all or catch up on work related stuff.

Transform your bedroom by first deciding on what your personal style is and by determining what you want to achieve.  You can integrate almost anything into your decor, even exercise equipment can be concealed until you need it.

Many current trends in bedroom living are incorporating a workspace with built in desks and swivel chairs, or a more relaxing environment with gas fireplaces, wet bars, lounge areas and comfort items like whirlpool baths and indoor fountains.

Use different textures in fabrics, wallpapers, paint finishes and window coverings to create a certain style and atmosphere.

Small or Large Room? To make a room look larger use pale colours and light scaled furniture and accessories.  Mirrors make the space look larger and chairs with open arms also give an illusion of a bigger space.

Making a large room look more intimate can be achieved by using a variety of textures, rugs and tapestries with dominant patterns and sprawling furniture arrangements.

Work Wonders with Colour. No other design element has the quick impact of dramatic effect of colour.  Colours are effective for creating different types of atmospheres in different types of light.

Colours effect our emotions and perceptions.  Research shows that red tends to increase the heart rate, oranges are comforting and blue has a calming effect.  Green is considered the most peaceful and restful colour.

Arranging Your Room. Make sure your largest pieces of furniture are on the longest walls.  Tops of chests and cabinets should maintain the same line around the room.  Remember to keep a clear way for traffic, for safety and comfort.
